7 things to increase breast milk supply

Nothings is better than breast milk for babies. It is very important for the health and growth of baby to consume breast milk. If your breast milk is not enough , first thing you should do is feed your baby as much as you can from your breast, which releases hormones in your body to produce breast milk. Also consume these 7 things to increase your milk supply.

1. Fenugreek

it is a ancient belief that giving fenugreek seed to the lactating mother helps in increasing milk supply. It is also a good source of iron, calcium and minerals.
But be careful before consuming it too mach because it is diuretic (any substance that promotes the production of urine) and you may end up losing lots of water.

2. Garlic

garlic milk is a popular post delivery drink given to the nursing mothers.
Mothers who eat garlic tend to feed for longer time.

3. Cumin seed

Cumin seed – know your spices

Beside increasing milk supply cumin also help in digestion and provide relief from constipation (common problem after post delivery).

4. Cinnamon

is it just me or have you noticed that cinnamon appears to be a hot ...

You can drink cinnamon milk or cinnamon tea.

5. Pulses and legumes

... description: Grains pulses and beans in bowl over white over

pulses are good source of protein. Breastfeeding mothers can drink pulses (Dal) by adding one spoon of ghee, it will help in increasing milk supply.

6. Oats

Oat is also popular for milk supply and it is a good source of fiber and provide relief from constipation.

7. Nuts

nuts like cashew and almond boost the milk production. Some dry fruits also use in making ladoos and halwa and flavored milk for nursing mom's.

Why do babies wake up when you put him/her down?

When you think your baby is fallen in deep sleep  in your arm and you are trying to put her/him down on the bed and they started crying or open her eyes and look at you in such a way that they were not sleeping. Some of the parents get frustrated because they need some break or if they are hungry, but don't worry your baby is not the only who is doing this, it happens to everyone.

It takes about 20 min to go in deep sleep to the babies or some time more,  even when you tried to put her/him down to the bed they will be awake and its all over. They wants to be back in their mommy's arm no matter how many times you tried and how deep of sleep they were? It happens over and over again.

Its quite natural because babies sleep cycle is different and they will get disturb and wake up easily.
Its biologically design that they can easily understand the separation from the mommy  because they feel the warmth of the body, smell of breast milk and heartbeat of the mother when you position them on your shoulder.

It happens more, till 9 months as newborn brain is not developed enough, so they don't understand that they are the separate individual from their mother. They feel protected with you.

So the idea is, always try to give 20 min in your arm or lie down with baby on the bed until  they go to the deep sleep. Do not feel weird if they wake up again after trying all this, because just before they born they never felt frightened, hungry, need to poop, cold or warm. Create a comfortable environment for them.

Avoid Contraceptives While Breastfeeding

Pills are absolutely fine unless you are not breastfeeding. Most of the birth control pills reduces the milk supply in mothers if they are in combination of estrogen-progesterone(these are sex hormones).

There are two area of concern while taking birth control pills during breastfeeding:
1. effect on milk production
2. there are some possibility of effect of hormones on baby

contraceptive comes in different type, some are with the combination of both estrogen and progesterone and other are progesterone only (called mini pills) .

There is no evidence that the birth control pill containing only progesterone effect the milk production. So it is safe to avoid pills specially those having estrogen during breastfeeding. Always notice while taking these medicine if you are breastfeeding.

How to sooth your baby with massage?

Massage is very important for baby's emotional and physical development. Its very common in India (and many other countries) for moms to give massage to babies.  It helps in calming down your baby as well as they will be more happy. While giving massage moms develop  special bond with their babies, and of-course massaging with oil  also helps in strengthening muscle and  soothing a tired baby.

You can use coconut oil or any baby oil, some mothers use baby moisturizing lotion for massage, which is also a good option. I am  a new mom and I also face the same problem of choosing right oil for my baby, initially I used baby oil but later I end up with coconut oil as doctor suggested and which is really good for baby skin, make sure its pure.

How to massage?

Apply a good amount of oil all over the body and massage in circular motion for at least 20 min. Press Their legs and arms, then cross babies arm and legs gently to give them little bit of stretch. This also help them in passing gas.

My doctor suggested not to do massage or use any bathing product of baby for at least 15 to 20 days till their umbilical cord falls off completely. Newborn's skin are very soft and delicate and pores should be open to breath by their skin.

An apple a day can help you in reducing weight

When you are hungry after gym you crave for food, That's because you are low on energy and your stomach is empty. Craving for food is caused by a  hormone called ghrelin, that  turn on cravings when our stomach is empty. Hormones are the messengers that influence how we feel, and how fast our body stores fat. If you let yourself go hungry, your cravings will be too intense to resist. Trick to stay full and suppress your appetite is to eat the fruits full with fibre content, before or after your meal.
Start your day with an apple. Apples are low in fat and calories and loaded with fibre. These fibre keep your stomach full for longer and suppress your appetite. There is a soluble fibre in apple called pectin, which reduces the amount of sugar and calories that absorbed in your bloodstream after a meal. Even the people who sank their teeth in an apple for 15 minutes before meal they consume fewer calories than those who consume apple juice or apple sauce.
There are other foods that can suppress your appetite. Here is the list
Pine- nuts, Salad, Whey protein, Beans, Avocado, Flax Seed, Green tea, Water, Oatmeal etc.

How long can you refrigerate food?

We always pick so many food item from the grocery and store it into the refrigerator for longer time. But we never thought how long do freezer food really keep? As we think that frozen food remain safe indefinitely as long as your refrigerator is plugged in. However technically,  the foods which is kept  forever, do not actually taste as earlier.

Many people think it is not safe to eat any product after the date on the label (Expiration date), and if they do they will get food poisoning. Because there is average lifespan of some common foods. But expiration dates are not as clear cut as they seems, and sometime perfectly fine food makes you ill or cause food poisoning. The problem is, expiration dates do not indicate what we think they do.

As a general rule of thumb, frozen food will keep for three months in a standard home freezer before starting to show signs of freezer burn.Freezer burn is a common problem in which food packages covers with frost and sucks the moisture out of then and when you cook this type of food they will lack  good flavour and texture.

If you are storing foods in plastic bags, be sure to follow the guideline of food and drug administration for safe storage. sometimes the flavour can be changed due to storage of  its limited time.So to avoid this type of problem, make a chart for your refrigerated item, and use your food items at the right time.

Why not to eat papaya during pregnancy?

There is myth (specifically in rural part of India) about papaya that it is not safe to eat during pregnancy, because it causes miscarriage  and stillbirth sometime.

If papaya is unripe then its not safe to eat. Because unripe papaya contains a substance called latex, and this  latex may trigger uterine contractions which leads miscarriage.

But fully ripened papaya is a good source of sodium, potassium, vitamins with no cholesterol so it is safe to use papaya during pregnancy, because papaya help to reduce the constipation and heartburn which is a common problem during pregnancy. So many expert suggest to eat ripened papaya to the pregnant woman.

Papaya contains an enzyme called papain that helps in digestion. This papain is found in fruits latex and leaves. So this latex of unripe papaya acts like prostaglandin and oxytocin which is also responsible for starting labour pain (doctors use synthetic prostaglandin and oxytocin  to artificially induce labor pain).

An unripe or semi ripe papaya should completely be avoided during pregnancy, and fully ripe papaya should be used only on doctor’s recommendation in very small amount.

Facts about your daily breakfast - EGG

Egg is the excellent source of protein which are easy to digest .one large egg contain about 213 mg of cholesterol, which is found only in egg yolk not in egg white. Many researches shows that for a healthy diet less than 300 mg cholesterol, we can take in a day,if you have cardiovascular disease, diabetes, high blood cholesterol, you should limit your dietary cholesterol less than 200 mg a day. So if you eat an egg in a given day, its important to avoid other sources of cholesterol for rest of that  day.

Sometime  people think that different colour of egg yolk affects its nutritional value, this is not correct. The different colour of egg yolk depending on what the hens eat. Hens that consume more green plant, corn  they tend to produce dark yellow egg yolk. Egg yolk is rich source of vitamin A.

Many people think that brown eggs must be better than white eggs because they are more expensive,. What makes brown eggs more expensive is as simple as size , the chickens that lay brown eggs are larger than those that lay white eggs and thus their feed costs more. Other than the colour of shell , there is no difference  between white egg and a brown egg, and this is controlled by genetics. Both types egg having the same flavour, shelf life and cooking characteristics. it's not necessarily that the colour of the yolk depends on the colour of shell.

Sometime people think that, the egg they eating are a potential chick embryo. Typically the egg sold in the grocery are produced from hens that do not have rooster present. As a result the egg is not fertilized and can never have a chicken embryo develop.

Eating raw egg can put you at risk for salmonella poisoning, which is a type of food poisoning. Eggs are perishable food and must be properly stored and cooked.

There are pasteurized eggs available in the market, by means of pasteurized egg is, it have been heated at a certain temperature to destroy bacteria that can cause food poisoning. It does not affect the nutritional value of eggs even it is safer to use.

Egg allergies are caused by the same problem all allergies are caused by an immune system malfunction. Your body misidentifies certain egg proteins as harmful even though they are perfectly safe. When you eat eggs, your body thinks it's being attacked and sends out an antibody called immunoglobulin E to fight off the proteins, or allergens. The antibody then triggers a number of chemicals, including histamine, to neutralize the proteins. Histamine is responsible for most allergic symptoms, including sneezing, hives and diarrhoea.

How to choose right cooking oil?

Its difficult for shopper to choose cooking oil because  they come in  long range of prices & variety (like extra virgin oil ,vitamins enriched oil, low smoke oil, rice bran oil  etc.),  confusion becomes more because of  their attractive packaging, price and advertisements.

But we should actually know, which oil is best for baking, frying and sautéing vegetables, and of course for health.

To get started on the selection process, the first thing you should know is the cooking oils smoke point, which is the temperature at which the oil starts to break down and smoke, which ultimately leads to terribly taste of food.

Oils with low temperature smoke points are best for low-temperature food preparation, such as  salad dressing base, and simmering. And oils with high temperature smoke points are best for high-temperature cooking such as deep-frying and grilling.

Of course variety of cooking oils exist in the market, does not mean that you have to carry a large number of different cooking oils in your kitchen. Pick a few that you really enjoy using, both for flavor and for temperature. You can keep soy bean oil, extra virgin olive oil, and sesame oil in your kitchen. The soy oil has the highest smoke point, so it's great for grilling or high-heat frying. The olive oil is tasty, and best for baking and low-and-slow sautéing and also good for your health.

Finally keep your budget in mind. Some are highly refined oils and others that are more natural (have health benefits) are pretty expensive, so do your calculation before buying. There is nothing worse than buying an oil just because it has a high smoke point or someone write in their article that this particular oil good for your health.

Vegetable oils are most commonly used in kitchen. Made from a blend of oils refined from vegetables, seeds, and nuts, vegetable oil is inexpensive and useful for many different types of cooking. This oil has a mild flavor which is ideal for baking and pan-frying. The high smoke point of this oil is also good for deep frying.

Olive oil is less multi-purpose than vegetable oil. This oil can have a different range of flavors and contain varying levels of acidity. Olive oil has a low smoke point and is not recommended for stir-frying. Olive oil is best used for baking sautéing and in salad dressing.

cooking oil with low smoke point: Flaxseed oil, unrefined olive oil.

cooking oil with medium smoke point: coconut oil, extra virgin olive oil, corn oil, canola oil.

cooking oil with high smoke point: palm oil, sesame oil, ghee, peanut oil,soy bean oil.

Why gluten is allergic to some of you and how to avoid it.

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley and rye, as well as foods made from these grains, Because gluten is a protein, it has nutritional value. Gluten also makes foods taste better and improves their texture, so it is added to many processed foods.

Gluten consists of two protein that is gliadin and glutenin. It is the gliadin part that react negatively. Gliadin is alcohol-soluble and glutenin which is only soluble in dilute acids or alkalis. When flour is mixed with water, gluten forms a sticky cross-linked network of proteins, giving elastic properties to dough. Actually the name gluten is derived from these glue-like property.

In celiac disease the immune system attacks the gluten proteins (gliadin), but it also attacks an enzyme in the cells of the digestive tract called tissue transglutaminase, which results in omitting , diarrhoea, and abdominal pain.

There is another disorder called gluten sensitivity, which is much more common. Although there is no clear definition of gluten sensitivity, it means having some sort of adverse reaction to gluten and your symptom will improve when you start gluten-free diet.

If you have adverse reactions to gluten, then it is called non-celiac gluten sensitivity. In non-celiac gluten sensitivity, there is no attack on the body’s own tissues. However many of the symptoms are similar to those in celiac disease, including bloating, stomach pain, fatigue, diarrhoea, as well as pain in the bones and joints.
Some research indicates that about 0.5 and 1.0 percent of people in the US and UK are sensitive to gluten due to celiac disease, which constitutes an abnormal immune reaction to partially digested gliadin.

Going gluten-free can be difficult at first since you’ll need to learn to read labels of the packets that you bought and identify foods without gluten. If you are allergic then consult your dietitian, they can help you to plan a nutritious gluten-free diet to eliminate symptoms of celiac disease or non-celiac gluten sensitivity. When eating out, ask your server what ingredients are used in food, whether this food is gluten free..

Under regulation of Codex alimentarious and WHO every producer have to mention whether product contains gluten or gluten free on the packaging, To inform consumer about gluten in the product they are consuming.

Reason behind burning throat when you drink soft drinks!!

The carbonation in soda/soft drinks is a primary ingredient. This is carbon dioxide dissolved in water, this forms carbonic acid, which is a weak acid responsible for the tangy  taste and also slight burning feeling when going down to your throat. Some sodas also have other acid added such as coca- cola which added ascorbic acid also adding flavour and burning taste.

Carbonation or fizz is the process of dissolving carbon dioxide in a liquid. The process usually involves carbon dioxide under high pressure. When the pressure is reduced, the carbon dioxide is released from the solution as small bubbles, which causes the solution to become fizzy.

Carbon dioxide is a harmless, odourless and colourless gas, which is present in the atmosphere and gives beverages a tangy taste and an invigorating drink sensation.
